The Biographical Dictionary of Literary Failure C D Rose Andrew Gallix 9781612193786 Books

I didn't know the term 'satirical dictionary' in English, so I bought this book thinking it narrated real stories of writers who never published or succeded in publishing. After reading some 'entries' I thought 'Are they kidding me?'. So I went back to the comments and confirmed the fictional nature of the stories.

And anyway... I can't stop reading. This book gives so much information about the literary world and imagines so many things that can go wrong, that it should be read by would-be authors and even novel writers. It's not only enjoyable, it gives you pause. And of course, one is relieved to know these wretched lives only existed in the mind of the author.

The Biographical Dictionary of Literary Failure C D Rose Andrew Gallix 9781612193786 Books Reviews

There is a well- known anomaly in the very writing of this book. It is a celebration of literary failure but certainly one of its major aims is to provide its author C.D. Rose with a literary success. According to the well-known Washington Post reviewer Michael Dirda it has done exactly that. Whether reality - based or pure imagination, these tales of the search for literary glory leading to various oblivions raises to larger literary consciousness, one name alone , that of C.D. Rose. His great idea , which is seeking to understand the literary world through chronicling the efforts and sorrows of its failures provides a kind of consolation, I suppose, to would- be- writers who also have known failure. It also provides consolation to all those who have seen their great dreams lead them into situations of foolishness and failure. Dirda says the work is done with originality and great satirical intelligence. It is an interesting idea ably executed.
But whether the discover of poor Hans Kafka will come to anything like the kind of literary success Kafka's supposed neighbor the great Franz came to is another question.
For literary greatness is so rare and so difficult that there is no way it can be achieved by cleverness and intelligence alone.
Many are capable of writing curiosities but only Borges is capable of making them Borges.
Quirky and interesting
Wide-ranking, particularly pleased with the inclusion of Latin American authors like Bolaño.
Should give heart or not to aspiring writers and other literary critters.
I laughed out loud while reading almost every page. Probably the cleverest satire of literary pretentiousness and authorial idiosyncrasy ever produced in the English language. If you possess either (i) the slightest interest in literature or (ii) any sense of humor whatsoever, you should read this book. C.D. Rose is a very funny (and very smart) person. Reminded me of the first time I read Peacock.
Proving Chesterton's (I believe) adage that if a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing badly. I don't mean this book, but the books whose authors this book 'dictionaries' (can this noun be verbalized (pun intended)?).
This is a strange, splendid little book that uses fictional biographies to explore the largest body of writers in history the unsuccessful ones. Ranging across time and place, Rose considers authors who could never get past great first sentences, writers whose commitment to authenticity led them to crime, scribes who vanished after black magic rituals gone wrong, and a writer who simply didn't want to get out of bed. By turns funny, sad, and (for prospective writers, anyway) sobering, this book is worth your time.
