Mary Connealy has done it again! I've read many of her books and this one is one of my favorites. I love her internal dialoques that let the reader in on the characters' thoughts as the story unfolds. This book, in particular, captured my interest immediately because I spend some time every year in Arizona, in the Flagstaff area, so I have been to the Canyon numerous times. I loved her descriptions of the various aspects of the Canyon's personality and the "character" of the Canyon just hums through this book. While I have never taken the south rim trail down into the Canyon,I have experienced the raft trip down the Colorado River , so when Connealy records the characters' reactions to the beauty and majesty of the \
Canyon, as well as the frightening aspects as well, I relate. I say "BRAVO" to Ms. Connealy and "Keep up the great work!

This was a good book to read love Mary Connelly's books.
Ms. Connealy is so talented. This story is very well researched. As an archeologist I have worked in the southwest and appreciate this story.
I love, love, love Mary Connealy books! This one is outstanding and carries with it the message that we should lay up our treasure in heaven rather than on earth.
She has such wonderful characters that you feel you know them or would like to! She also incorporates such dry humor that at several places, I was laughing out loud and even kept my husband from enjoying his Sunday afternoon nap reading the funny parts to him!
"Deep Trouble" starts off well enough, landing us smack dab in the middle of action. Immediately, you fear the villains of the story, commiserate with the heroine, and are looking forward to the rest of the book.
And then it just falls flat.
I think it really starts going sour when the ingenue and romantic male initiate a physical relationship practically immediately, before they even know each other. It does not fit in at all with the mindset of their faith or of the time period. The slow horse rides through the desert are boring, and the constant references to the girl's "tough belly." And if it's not bad enough, the ending is an EXACT rip-off of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" all the way down to the dialogue. I wonder if the author was watching it one night and it just sort of stuck in her head. From the reference of Coronado's cross to the end sequence, where various characters are hanging off of the cliff, risking their lives greedily reaching for the artifact. Quite audacious to plagiarize so.
As for the romantic pairings, you will not have much faith in them. The characters even admit that their pairings do not make much sense. So, if the characters do not believe in themselves, why should we?
Boring, unrealistic, and unoriginal, to the point where I am not sure even the other believes in this book.
I am a huge fan of Mary Connealy. I'm pretty sure I've read nearly every one of her books. She's done some great work but this isn't the strongest one. The story was good and the characters interesting but halfway through I found myself thinking of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In fact the climactic scene plays out almost verbatim. But in her typical fashion, Connealy brings us wholesome, brave characters who fight for their beliefs and find strength in unlikely companions. I would recommend for a rainy day read.
Looking for earth ly gold leads to troublle. God's gold is pure and peaceful. The book is a good read.
I really enjoyed this story. It had a lot of humor. The female lead was a bit whiny for my taste but she grew on me. In the end it was a pleasurable read.
